A: |
The memory on the mobile device is divided Flash-ROM and RAM. The operating system and pre-installed applications are stored write-protected in the ROM (OS Disk). Besides that there is an area for the file system in the ROM, in which the user can save programs and files (User Disk). On IT-800, the User Disk is separated into Root Disk (-> e.g. Windows, Program Files, My Documents, etc.) and Flash Disk (-> FlashDisk folder). You can install your applications to both Root Disk and Flash Disk. However, service packs and patches should always be installed to the Root Disk (default).
After the system start, parts of the operating system are kept in the RAM. The rest (Program Memory) is available to run programs. As a backup battery protects the RAM for up to 10 minutes, you can change the main battery without rebooting the device.
In order to check current memory consumption, you can go to START, SETTINGS, SYSTEM, MEMORY, where "Storage" represents the Root Disk, "FlashDisk" the Flash Disk, and "Program" the RAM. |

You can allocate more program memory for your own application by exiting all other applications that are not necessary. In this connection we would like to draw your attention to the items of the today screen. You can disable those items at START, SETTINGS, TODAY. Do not forget to check the shortcuts at \Windows\StartUp that will launch applications automatically after every reset. |
Q: | Backup (Windows Mobile) |
A: |
Since the contents of the user disk also remains without battery, a protection of your installation usually will not be necessary like before under Windows CE 4.1 or 5.0. For generating or reading a back up file use the Backup Tool from the Start menu. In this context please pay attention to the configuration files for the scanner and WLAN in the FLASHDISK folder.
Please, note:
- The backup file on the FLASHDISK will be deleted by User Disk Clear. Therefore, it might be necessary to use an SD-Card as target.
- If you use an SD-Card, we strongly recommend using FAT32 instead of FAT16. See Technical Bulletin TB-2010008 for further details, please.
- To run the backup utility on IT-800 you need Service Pack 1.02. This applies to both creating a backup file and restoring from it. In other words: If you perform a "User Disk Clear" operation to initialize the device to factory default settings, you will have to install the Service Pack prior to restoring from backup file. Both backup and restore operation require the Service Pack!
- After installation of the Service Pack, you will find a copy of all files required for the backup tool at \FlashDisk\CE\ARM. Alternatively, after installation of the backup tool you could first create the backup file, copy all files of the backup tool at \FlashDisk\CE\ARM to SD-Card, and restore from backup file after "User Disk Clear" operation by calling "cf_backup.exe" on SD-Card. Please note, that there are some "hidden" files that you cannot see from File Explorer on IT-800. In order to see and copy all files please use the Explorer on your PC instead while the device is connected via ActiveSync.
- Please close all running applications before you create a backup file. Do not forget the applications started automatically by a shotcut in the folder \Windows\StartUp. As a solution you could cut those shortcuts and paste them into a different directory. Then, perform a soft reset operation to boot the device without those applications. In the next step move the shortcuts to their origin. Finally create the backup file. Remarks: The shortcut "Log.lnk" at \Windows\StartUp launches the Casio "Logging Tool". You can also close that application by running "MoLogStop.exe" from the Windows directory.
- For further details about backup & restore refer to our Software Manual, please. There you will also find an explanation how to customize the process by using parameters from command line.
- Configuation files for WLAN, laser scanner, or imager are not part of a backup file. You must save those files from "\FlashDisk\System Settings" separately.

| | Q: | Logging Tool |
A: |
The Logging Tool can be used to analyze system faults. It is started automatically by the shortcut "Log.lnk" at \Windows\StartUp. The shortcut points to "MoLogSys.exe" in the Windows directory. If you want to stop it either call "MoLogStop.exe" from the Windows directory or remove the shortcut and perform a soft reset operation. We recommend stopping the application before you create a backup file. For further details refer to the Software Manual, please. |
Q: | Setup |
A: |
For installation of CAB files we recommend using our "CAB FILE Automatic Setup Tool". Among other features you can easily install Service Pack, Patches, and your own application from SD-Card without the need for a soft reset operation after each single file.
Remarks: CAB files won't be deleted automatically, if you set the file attribute to "read only". |
| | Q: | Registry |
A: |
Any changes to the registry are written to a cache. If you perform a reset operation, changes might be lost. You can flush the cash to disk by either switching the device off and on again or calling the RegFlushKey function from the Windows API. |
